Terms of Service

By using Understudy you agree to these terms. You must be at least 18.

The service

Understudy finds job postings, prepares application materials from the information you provide, and submits applications on your behalf when you approve them or enable Autopilot. Employers make hiring decisions; we don't guarantee interviews, offers, sponsorship, or that any posting is still open. Understudy acts as you, with your permission: what it sends is your application, in your name.

Your responsibilities

• The information in your profile and resume must be true. Understudy is designed not to invent experience, but you are responsible for what is sent in your name, including answers about work authorization, sponsorship, age and criminal history, and the optional self-identification questions (gender, race, veteran status, disability). Where you have not answered, Understudy uses the defaults shown in your profile, and Home asks you to confirm them. By turning on Autopilot you tell Understudy to send applications that fit your preferences without showing you each one first; you can switch back to Review mode at any time.
• Applications often require you to tick agreements and certifications. Understudy ticks them on your behalf, based on your answers. Do not use it for a role you cannot truthfully certify.
• Only apply to roles you actually want and are eligible for. Don't use Understudy to spam employers or to apply on behalf of someone else without their permission.
• Some employers restrict automated applications in their own terms. Automated assistance is not guaranteed to be undetectable or accepted, an employer may reject or block applications it recognizes as automated, and you choose when to use it. Understudy stops when a site shows a human check (a captcha) and hands it to you: it does not use captcha-solving services and does not work around a site that blocks it. It will use a security code the employer emails you.
• Where an application system needs an account (Workday does), Understudy creates one in your name, with your email and a password it generates, and accepts that system's own terms as you. The account is yours and stays with that employer. You can see it, and the password, in Settings.
• Outreach emails are sent from your own Gmail, as you. You are the sender and responsible for them: write only to people you are comfortable contacting, about your own job search, with honest subject lines. Do not use it for bulk or unsolicited marketing.

Accounts

Keep your login and access tokens private. We may suspend accounts that abuse the service or employer systems.

Plans and billing

• There is no free trial: a paid plan is charged when you check out and renews monthly until you cancel. Accounts made before 21 October 2026 keep the 40 sent applications they were given instead. Pro is a subscription billed monthly through Stripe, and renews automatically until you cancel. Lifetime is a single payment with no renewal and no application limit, for as long as Understudy is offered; if we ever stop offering it we will tell you in advance.
• A plan's allowance counts only applications Understudy actually sends. Skipped, failed and unsent applications don't count.
• You can cancel any time from Plan & billing → Manage subscription. You keep your plan until the end of the period you paid for, and you won't be charged again.
• Deleting your account cancels your subscription straight away, and you keep nothing for the rest of the period you paid for. Cancel first and use it out if you would rather.
• Payments aren't refunded for partial periods, except where the law requires it. If a charge looks wrong, email us and we'll sort it out.
• We may change prices; a change applies from your next billing period, and we'll tell you before it does.

Liability

The service is provided as-is. Employers and their application systems are not ours to control: we are not responsible for an employer rejecting, blocking or banning you, or for an application that did not go through. To the maximum extent allowed by law, our liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the past 12 months.

Changes

We may update these terms; continued use after changes means you accept them.

Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York.
